LOS ANGELES, CA – A 5-year-old boy has died after he apparently shot himself inside a home in Leimert Park, the boy was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, the Los Angeles Fire Department says.
Furthermore, the tragic incident occurred Thursday afternoon around 1 p.m. in the Leimert Park area.
Upon the investigation, police identified the boy, whose first name is Justice, was a foster child who was under the care of his legal guardian. Witnesses say the legal guardian is a family member.
“We’ve known them and knew all the children that live there,” a close neighbor, Renee Henry, said.
There were two other children under the age of 12 at the home when the incident happened.
An LAPD spokesman states that the 5-year-old boy may have accidentally shot himself while playing with the handgun inside the home but are still investigating how the boy managed to find the gun. Moreover, police are also ruling out possibilities that someone else may have shot him.
LAPD also says that there is no reason to believe that the public is in danger nor if there are any other suspects involved in this case.
Residents in that neighborhood took the time to express their thought on how a child can gain access to a gun and the dreadful outcome it can have.
Also, the foster care system is involved in the investigation as well as the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services who are looking into issues such as any danger the children are prone to at the home.
Police did not release any further details about the case as investigation is still ongoing.
