California DOT Number
If you are a motor carrier with a home base in California and operate solely within the state borders, legally you do not need to have a USDOT Number. However, if you plan on operating interstate, getting a California DOT number becomes a requirement. The USDOT Number is a unique number for your business used to access your company’s safety information. It can be necessary during various check-ups such as audits, crash investigations, compliance reviews and inspections.
No matter what your home base state is and what states you operate in, DOT requirements stay the same. That means that you are going to need a DOT number if:
- your vehicle’s gross weight or combination weight is 10,001 pounds or more;
- your vehicle transports more than 8 passengers (including the driver) in exchange for payment;
- the vehicle in your name transports more than 15 passengers (including the driver) without compensation.
