    California Hazardous Materials Transportation (Hazmat)

    CA Hazmat

Companies that ship hazardous materials are required to ensure that their shipping operations meet all domestic and international standards. This is per the law of California Hazardous Materials Transportation.

In order for workers to handle, remove, or ship hazardous materials in the state of California, a Hazmat certification is required.  Careers in transportation, shipping, emergency rescue and firefighting, construction, mining, waste treatment, and disposal are all required, by law, to obtain a HAZMAT certification. Obtaining a license gives the holder the ability to transport any kind of hazardous material through California without penalty.

Who Needs California Hazmat Transportation License?

    • Hazardous materials shipments for which the display of placards is a requirement per CVC §27903.
    • Hazardous material shipments that are more than 500 pounds. These would require placarding if shipped in greater amounts in the same manner.

Reminder: A Hazardous Materials Transportation License must be on-hand in the vehicle. It must be up-to-date, valid and legal.

What If I Fail to Comply with Hazmat Regulations?

If you fail to meet the requirements or do not comply with domestic and international Hazmat Transport Regulations, then you are at risk of rejected shipments. You may be subject to fines as high as $78,376 per day/per violation, and carrier blacklisting. You must ensure that you have obtained a legible California Hazmat license and can peacefully manage your hazmat shipping operations.
